Rustic garden fence...

We needed a fence for our vegetable garden to keep the dogs out (they think it's their playground, and love to dig in it).  We couldn't see spending a lot of time and money to do a fancy fence because we plan to possibly expand the garden next year.   We wanted something that was free and that wouldn't be wasted if we took it down later.  So, we looked through the wood we had left over from the big tree we cut down last fall.  K plans to use the big pieces for firewood, but there were lots of small but longish pieces that he hadn't cut or split yet.  They make the prefect rustic, simple, temporary garden fence.  If we decide to take it down next year we will just use it as firewood.  It took us about 2 hours (during the girls nap time) to get this done.  I love it, I just wish it could keep the bunnies out too.

Daylilies, oh how I love thee...

I have many different types of daylilies in my garden.  I got all of them from gardener friends or family. Most of these I only planted 2 summers ago and they have filled in quite abundantly.  I might even have to thin them out next summer.  Anyone want to do a lily/flower trade?

These ones I just transplanted this year, from some that I originally planted at my parents house probably 17 years ago.

Peonies and such...

Today I picked these beautiful magenta peonies from my garden.  After the nice warm weather we have been having, so many things are starting to bloom.  These were the first three and I couldn't help but pick them.  

We are working in the gardens every spare moment we get these days and plan to plant our veggies this weekend.  We are also removing one of our large flower beds and relocating all of the perennials which has been a tremendous amount of work.  K separated and planted over 40 hostas last weekend.  Here is a peek at what else has been blooming:

Copper iris (the first one opening today).   I got these from my mom and dad's house.  My dad was ripping them out, much to my mom's dismay.  I plan to sneak some back into her garden sometime when he's not looking.

Fuschia creeping phlox.  These have been blooming for a while now.

Lily of the Valley blooming for the first time this year.  These were rescued from a gardener friend's cast offs.

Spring has sprung, but I am thinking about summer...

Yes, spring has sprung unusually early here in Western, NY and all this nice weather has me wanting to freshen up the house, open the doors and windows and get the porch furniture out of the shed...But most of all, I have been thinking about my gardens.  I love planning new plants for the perennial gardens and deciding what we will attempt to grow in the vegetable garden.  Last year was a tough year for us landscaping wise because I was pregnant the whole warm season which meant I couldn't do a whole lot and everything became quite overgrown.  The bouquet in this photo was a sampling of our perennials from last year.  What do you plant in your garden?
